Board Games

Apparently there are a lot of people out there that love board games as much as I do. I received a few emails and comments about it. When we were growing up, Life was my favorite but it took too long so we used to play Yahtzee. I used to love to play Life to see what path I'd take. I used to get mad if I skipped over the having kids parts and would name each of the ones I did land on. I hated Monopoly. Even back then, I wasn't good at earning money. I'd always feel bad for people that had no properties so I'd give them some. It drove the other people I was playing with crazy. Every guy I dated, kicked my butt at Monopoly and it goes down as one game Leo and I can't play together without us getting into a fight. Scrabble is the other. I already wrote about some of the fun Leo and I have had (at his expense) in Leo the Spelling Genius and because I never seem to have a huge block of time, Scrabble is not one we can play anymore. After our kids came along we played Chutes and Ladders and Candyland and as they got older, my favorite game that has gone MIA and is hard to find without spending a lot of money: WhoNu. That was an innocent game that we played with the kids and with our friends. I say innocent because when we play with our friends, it can get pretty gross (why are grown men still obsessed with bodily functions?).

These days our favorite board games are Loaded Questions and Truth Be Told. We've played both with family and with friends and I have laughed until my stomach hurt. Taboo and Tribond are two more of my favorites and I'll always love Trivia Pursuit because I have a plethora of useless knowledge in my head only good for playing that game. I think some people shy away from board games because they are afraid to let loose and let others know more about them. Some shy away because when the games take a turn down "fart lane" they are too grossed out to keep playing.

I enjoy learning more about my friends and in turn learning how they see me and even learning a little more about myself. For example, while playing Truth Be Told, one of the questions was I spend too much time______. I put down "shopping at Target". Others put down "reading," "on the computer," "in the shower," "wishing," and the ever popular, "staring at Leo's butt." Obviously the person that put "in the shower" has no idea that I'm lucky to get a 5 minute shower. I don't spend enough time reading and I really do spend too much time on the computer. "Staring at Leo's butt" got a laugh and though it is a cute one, I am too busy to do much more than glance at it as he heads out to the 100th basketball game or to coach basketball practice or as he flies out of here to go play basketball. The one that got me was the "wishing." I do spend too much time doing that. It was a great answer from someone that knows me better than I know myself: Leo (bet you thought he did the butt one).
